Theraplay®

Father and Son Playing

Theraplay is a relationship focused child and family play therapy model that has as its goal enhancing and building attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement.

The therapist guides the parent and child through playful, fun games, developmentally challenging activities, and tender, nurturing activities.

The very act of engaging each other in this way helps the parent regulate the child’s behaviour and communicate love, joy, and safety to the child. It helps the child feel secure, cared for, connected and worthy.

Theraplay is a collaborative process between the practitioner and parent. Sessions with the parents or carers alongside parent/child sessions provide support and psychoeducation as the parent takes on a more active role in their child's therapy.

Theraplay is often recommended where there have been disruptions in Attachment relationships through separation and loss.

The parent-child connection is the most powerful mental health intervention known to mankind
